With it’s rich volcanic soil, this land was home to ancient Mayan cultures and has been an economic and social center for thousands of years and can draw on a centuries-long heritage of coffee cultivation.

The Chiquimula area of Guatemala boast rich volcanic soil, a temperate environment, and a community which can draw on a centuries-long heritage of coffee cultivation.
A stunning collage of rugged mountains, virgin forests, volcanoes, ravines, verdant valleys, and sweeping plains, this land was home to ancient Mayans and has been economically, socially, and culturally important for thousands of years.
This area is known locally as La Perla de Oriente due to its beautiful landscapes, architecture, and people. Many of Guatemala's best poets, writers, singers, and musicians are local to Chiquimula. Esquipulas, located inside the department of Chiquimula is famous for its Black Christ, a wooden image of Christ housed in the Cathedral Basilica of Esquipulas. Blending these names together, the coffee is called La Perla Negra, or "The Black Pearl."
