Coffee Review - Coffee Review was founded in 1997. They conduct blind expert cuppings of coffees and report the findings in the form of 100-point reviews, parallel to those in the wine industry. They educate readers about coffee with in-depth tasting reports and technically informed commentary. Since its founding, Coffee Review has become the world’s most widely read and influential coffee buying guide. Coffee Review has scored over 30 of Red Rooster's coffees with a 90 or above, including Flight Seasonal Espresso which was chosen as their #13 coffee of the year (2017)
America's Best Coffee House 2015 - Our sister company and local coffee house, Black Water Loft, was selected to compete in the East Coast America's Best Coffee House Competition, hosted by Coffee Fest. The competition challenges baristas to create a small scale coffee house in fifteen minutes, serve espresso based drinks and a specialty drink influenced by the baristas in thirty minutes, and finally clean the entire station in fifteen minutes while being judged throughout the the whole process. After a full weekend of competing the Black Water Loft was awarded 3rd place.
America's Best Espresso 2016 - During the America's Best Espresso Competition a barista has ten minutes to dial in, prepare the espresso, and serve three judges. Our assistant roaster, Grace McCutchan, took a blend of the Ethiopia Halo Bariti and Ethiopia Birhanu to the East Coast Qualifiers in New York City. After rigorous training and two full days of competing she came home with 1st place and will be competing at the National Competition in Nashville this upcoming March.
Golden Bean Award 2016 & 2017 - This competition endeavors to find North America’s best coffee roasting business by evaluating their coffee as an Espresso, Milk and Filter beverage. Our classic Old Crow Espresso Blend and the Fall 2016 Flight Blend won the bronze in the Milk-Based and Organic Espresso categories.
Charleston Cup Best in Show - The Charleston Coffee Cup is a convention that brings the foodie community and specialty coffee community together. At the 2016 convention, Red Rooster won 3rd in the roasting competition and People's Choice for Best in Show.
Good Food Award 2016 - The Good Food Awards celebrate the kind of food we all want to eat: tasty, authentic and responsibly produced. The competition grant awards to outstanding American food producers and the farmers who provide their ingredients. They host an annual Awards Ceremony and Marketplace in San Francisco to honor the Good Food Award recipients who push their industries towards craftsmanship and sustainability while enhancing agricultural landscape and building strong communities. Out of hundreds of coffees, our Washed Ethiopia Hambela was selected as a winner in the specialty coffee category!
Brewers Cup Qualifier 2017 - Recently our accounts manager, Philip Hatter, competed in the Brewers Cup Qualifier in Knoxville, TN. He brewed the Natural Ethiopia Hambela in the Chemex and gave a heart-felt narrative about how coffee brings the community together. Out of 36 competitors, Philip took 8th place and competed at the National Brewers Cup Competition in Seattle, Washington in April 2017.
